IF MUESLI WILL NOT GO TO BEIJING, MISS MUESLY MUST TAKE CARE OF THIS.
I love people who contribute to make Beijing a better and healthier place. Klara Dlohua is definitely one of them. Together with her Chinese partner Anita Zhang, she started a muesli business five months ago [www.missmueslibeijing.com] – and since then they have been providing people with healthy and affordable muesli and granola blends from a tiny muesli bar in Xiguan Hutong. Breakfast in Beijing has never been easier.
We caught up over a foamy cappuccino last week – I wanted to know more about her food adventure, and definitely try their products!
Why open a muesli business in Beijing?
I used to be a big muesli fan before coming to China. In Europe muesli it’s common and affordable and it represents the go-to breakfast for almost 80% of the population. When I got to Beijing I slowly stopped eating it as it was either too expensive or not good enough. Then I figured I was probably not the only one dealing with this shortage – and I’ve decided to make it my mission to bring more muesli to town.
Did you draw inspiration from any similar business in Europe?
DIY (do it yourself) muesli is not a new concept – when I was home last year in the Czech Republic I came across a company which creates its own muesli mix and it hit me! We need something like this in Beijing! I was working full time then and didn’t really have time to think about anything serious about this, but that was the first time I started thinking about a potential muesli business. Since then I haven’t been able to let it go!
Then I quit the office job I had and I was not happy with, and started sharing my muesli thought with Anita, who was in the food industry. She did some research about the Chinese market and we both realised it was actually a pretty good idea. I was at a point where I needed some action in my life. A muesli adventure was exactly what I was looking for. We started the company around 5 months ago and we have bee super busy since then!
How is it going?
They have been the busiest and most exciting 5 months of my life! It’s fun and extremely interesting – there are lots of things to do and so far it’s just the two of us. From relationship with suppliers to baking to marketing & social media. We are extremely motivated and we are enjoying every second of it. The time is now for us to ride our wave!
How is the relationship with Chinese customers?
Well, while foreigners know what muesli is, most of Chinese people have no idea about it. Then it’s challenging for us – we need to educate them and explain why muesli and granola are good for their health. The good thing is that they are extremely curious about everything ‘foreign’ and are willing to try new things. We really care about our Chinese customers – and we are also working to create ad hoc products closer to their taste. For example, when it comes to local clients, cinnamon is a no-go!
Where do you source your ingredients?
In total we have around 30 ingredients. They are quite a few and yet never enough! We are as transparent as possible when it comes to sourcing – we import mainly from the Philippines, US, Russia and also locally, like from Yunnan. At the moment we are also introducing some organic ingredients – but we still need to make sure that the final price doesn’t get too high. This has always been the goal from the very first moment!
What’s the plan for the future?
We have many exiting projects in the oven for the coming months. During spring and summer, we will introduce new delicious mixes and broaden the range of our ingredients. We are also looking forward to developing further cooperations with other local brands. And since we realized muesli is loved and missed not only in Beijing but all over China, we are also looking for partners in other cities! I’m not sure what’s coming next, but I know that Anita and I are working hard to build a bright future – whatever is waiting for us!
Klara looked very determined to me – and it’s always exciting to see women shape their own future – as well as contribute to improve life quality of people around them.
With grains, dried fruit, seeds and nuts among the ingredients, muesli makes it the perfect breakfast for super busy days. And I’m already a big fan of their Mr. Naughty Nut!
For the chat with Klara at MOKA Bros. I was delighted to wear:
Leather jacket皮夹克: Mango
Nail color甲油: Chanel #563 Vertigo
The picture at MOKA Bros. was taken with my Sony NEX-5T.
For all the other pictures, special thanks to Miss Muesli.
