As you might already know, last week was Restaurants’ Week in Beijing and this means that you can find many special deals for both lunch and dinner around the city. This year, more than 50 restaurants participated to the event and offered 3-course lunches, from 49 to 128 CNY, and 3-course dinners, from 99 to 258 CNY. I felt it was my mission to explore new restaurants taking advantage of the discount, so that I could share my thoughts with you!
The first restaurant I chose was Eatalia, Di’anmen branch. I’m sure by now you know I love Italian food, and I’m always willing to discover more and more delicious places serving pasta, pizza & Co (for my latest discovery, check this out). I knew Eatalia by name, but I had never visited it, so I thought this was the right occasion!
The location is really cool: you enter on the ground floor where there are a few tables and a nice bar, then you pass through the red-white-green themed veranda, with 6 dining tables, and finally you get to the real gem of this restaurant, which is a rooftop terrace – unused during the winter – which (I guess) can host amazing barbecue parties as soon as the weather gets nicer.
They kept a table for us in the veranda, that was nicely warm and sunny. The menu for the restaurant week included a vegetable soup as a starter, pasta or gnocchi as a main dish and panna cotta as a dessert. I also gave a quick look to their a la carte menu, and they also have salads, risotto and ravioli. I guess I’ll have come back to try everything out!
After the eager waiter took our order, he brought us warm bread and olive oil. Bread is very important during an Italian meal – and this one was very good.
Then my asparagus soup arrived – the flavour was good, but personally I like thick vegetable soups, very creamy and tasty, while this one was a little bit too mild and liquid for my taste.
As a main, I ordered gnocchi with tomato sauce and mozzarella. They were delicious, homemade, and the texture was just perfect! Unfortunately though, it was a tiny portion, and it took me a very short time to finish them…Ah, I could have easily eaten a double serving!
The panna cotta they brought had a strong alcoholic flavour, reminded me of Amaretto Disaronno an Italian traditional liquor. Now, I am not a heavy drinker, so they might have used as well something else, but it was definitely a liquor, of this I am sure. And not being a heavy drinker I also don’t like too much liquor in cakes or desserts. I also think it covers the original aroma.
I must say the service was even too attentive, with a waiter standing behind our table all the time. But I had the feeling he was not really paying attention to us – maybe he was tired, given it was a really late lunch. So he made confusion with our orders (Giorgio’s carrot soup arrived together with the panna cotta), he didn’t refill our water glasses when empty, and the overall dinner timing was wrong – the main course arrived 2 minutes (literally) after the soup, and he brought the dessert while I was still eating my gnocchi. Maybe they need to solve some coordination problems in the kitchen first, and make sure the staff know what they are doing.
All in all, I think the most interesting element about Eatalia is their location and their amazing rooftop. I can’t wait to coming back here in the summer and enjoy barbecue and a cold drink in the sunshine! Oh! And they even gave me a 50 CNY coupon!
